The Declaration of Independence and Your Life Belongs to You

Your Life Belongs to You is the story that Charlotte Cushman told her students over the years about the founding of the United States of America.

The author became interested in the uniqueness of life in the United States when she was five years old.  At that time a relative from Yugoslavia came to live in the home and the family heard all the horror stories of life under communism.  It left a huge impact.

The communists in Yugoslavia had changed the history of the country.  Knowing that and also knowing that there is a movement to delete the study of early American history in our schools, convinced her to put the story in book form so that the entire story could be told in its essentials, impressing upon children the significance of its founding--the recognition of individual rights.
